The sonnets tell of a love affair. Recent scholarship sheds light on an actual affair that Millay had with George Dillon which provided the inspiration for Fatal Interview. It was during 1935 that Millay and Dillon collaborated on a translation of Baulelaire’s, Flowers of Evil. Miss Millay’s writings would gradually show her interests in social and political issues, most notably in her poems, Justice Denied in Massachusetts, concerning the Sacco and Vanzetti case of 1926 and later in her Murder of Lidice, 1942 a sentimental piece recounting the destruction of a Czech village by German troops.
